Winter Select Program

Mt. Diablo Soccer's Select program follows our Fall primary program and is only for the Under-10 through Under-19 divisions. This is an opportunity for players to improve their skills in a more competitive but still recreational environment. Players are chosen, teams formed and announced in November.  Training sessions typically start the first week of December. The Select program game schedule runs from January through mid-March and then all teams continue to play in tournaments that end typically in May but could go as late as June - depends on coach and team.

Who can participate in the Select Program?

All eligible players (Under-10 and up) are encouraged to apply. Please note that to be eligible for the Select program a player must be enrolled in the prior Fall primary program and must have participated in at least 50% of their fall team games. You may only participate in Select in the same division that you participated in during the Fall program.

The number of teams that will be formed in each division varies from year to year.  In general, there is typically 1 Select team for every 6 Fall program teams in each division.  Select teams will travel more than fall teams, as the region could play teams from Davis, Stockton and Rio Vista, as well as Winters, Rio Linda and Antelope (and possibly others - this may vary from year to year).

A higher level of commitment is expected from both the players AND the parents.  Select is for enthusiastic and motivated players. For the purposes of player development, a player is expected to regularly attend training sessions and games. Parents are also expected to participate in league organization, particularly in the running of the Area 2C & 2D Select Tournament and Concord Cup which MDSA is a Host.

What is the cost?

The Select registration fees is $95 to offset the cost of uniforms (two jerseys, shorts, socks and a warm up jacket), field rental fees and other incidental expenses. Additionally players should expect to play in a minimum of 4 tournaments that will cost roughly another $200 plus the cost of travel, food, and lodging depending on the location of the tournament.  The 2010 fees to play Select will be published in September and prior to player selection so parents will know the estimated costs to play Select and can plan accordingly.

How do I notify MDSA that I am interested?

An Online Select Application for coaches and players will be published and posted on our website no later than September 11th.

How are Select teams created?

Select teams are created around late October, early November timeframe after the fall program ends. The list of interested players is distributed to each appointed Select coach in early October.  The evaluation process in 2010 will include try out events which will be posted on our website and communicated to all Select applicants.  The try outs will be run by third party evaluators that will rate the applicants.  The player ratings will be used to help coaches balance teams in divisions where there will be more than two select teams.  In making their decisions, select coaches are asked to not only consider a player's soccer skills, but also their demonstrated sportsmanship, ability to be a team player, and commitment to fully participate in all team practices and games.

Who can be a Select coach?

The following policy was approved and adopted by the AYSO National Board of Directors:

Effective August 1st, 2009, all AYSO coaches and assistant coaches who wish to coach in the AYSO National Games, concurrent secondary play competitions (i.e. select season) or nationally sanctioned AYSO Tournaments must, at a minimum:

  1. Be a registered volunteer in eAYSO for the current year.
  2. Have AYSO Safe Haven for Coaches certification.
  3. Be trained per the National Coaching Program Guidelines at the age/skill level of the team they wish to enter/coach
Following are the required certifications for each of the age levels:

Division Minimum Required Certification
Under-10 U-10 Coach
Under-12 U-12 Coach
Under-14 Intermediate Coach
Under-16 & Under-19 Advanced Coach

Although only the age-specific course is required to meet the new requirement at the U-10 and U-12 levels, it is best for the players if each coach at U-10 and U-12 has the full range of AYSO coach training (U-6, U-8, U-10 and U-12).  Please note, however, before taking the Intermediate, Advanced or National Coach courses, there are prerequisites that must be met.  If you plan to coach at the U14 level or above in one or more of the identified competitions, please go to http://www.aysohelp.org/ and refer to the "Training Matrix" section for the prerequisites for Intermediate, Advanced or National Coach Training.

Select coach applications will be reviewed by the Select Committee.  After reviewing the certification and experience of each applicant. In addition observation during games and practices to ensure adherence to AYSO philosophy may also play a factor.

What about Select Teams and Tournaments?

Select teams will play in tournaments following the end of select season tournament.  Typically select teams play in at least four tournaments.  The tournaments are usually selected in consultation with the families of the players.  All tournament-related costs are separate and distinct from the Select season fee and are therefore the responsibility of each individual team.  The Regional Commissioner must approve all tournament team rosters.

For your planning purposes:

The select team will likely play half its games at away locations, so from January through mid-March, expect about five weekends during which you will play away games, usually in the Davis area, but sometimes Antelope or Stockton. All select teams participate in a tournament on a weekend in mid or late March. The tournament may be local or in Davis.

Select teams traditionally participate in the following additional tournaments:
